Q: How do you get your club to stand out at Lakeland College?
A: You host a week full of events for the student body.
That's exactly what the Psychology Club did. The Lakeland College Pysch Club held Brain Awareness Week during March 26-30.
"It (Brain Awareness Week) was to inform people of the mental health and well being and to inform others about the progress in brain research," Mallory Charlier, Psychology club (Psych club) president, said.
During that week, the Psych club hosted a yoga session (with the Alpha Psi Alpha sorority), Plinko night in the Pub and a talking session with director of career development Lisa Stephan, among other things.
Freshman member of the Psych club, Kristin Schwake, attended the session with Stephan. According to Schwake, the meeting was helpful because she was able to talk with Stephan about her future and possible internships.
Members of the club get together for meetings, game nights, brat fries and other events. The club tries to bring in psychologists, social workers and Lakeland alumni to the meetings to talk about psychology and other general subjects.
The Psych club is currently planning a game day on campus. The Gameboard, a company from Sheboygan, will "bring fun interactive games that anyone could enjoy," Charlier said.
The game day will most likely take place midday or early afternoon so children at The Learning Tree Academy and other children of students, faculty and staff can participate. There should be games for age three to adult. If interested, watch for announcements in the coming days.
The Psych club exists to "get people involved who are interested in psychology and inform…students about psychology and opportunities in psychology," Charlier said.
Currently, there are eight members of the Psych club: President, Mallory Charlier; Vice President, Nicole Chevrier; Secretary, Tanya Taylor; Secretary, Kristin Schwake; Treasurer, Rachel Resch; Jennifer Johnson; Mio Shimizu; Hannah Benton. Dr. Elizabeth Stroot is the club's advisor. Anyone who has an interest in psychology is encouraged to join.
"Even though we are not a well known organization on campus, we would like to be and we can only do that if we have more people who are interested in it," Charlier concluded.
