Lakeland College's American Humanics Student Association (AHSA) will hold its fifth annual wine and cheese silent auction on Friday, April 20 from 6 - 9 p.m. in the David and Valerie Black room in the Laun Center. The cost for the event is $25 per person or $35 per couple.

"The goal of the event is to raise money to send non-profit majors to the American Humanics Management Institution conference and to send children in Malawi to high school. Ten percent of all the money raised will go to sending Malawi students to school," said Jennifer Graff, sophomore and wine and cheese co-chair.

In order to be nationally certified for the non-profit major, students have to attend the annual conference at least once.

Anybody who has paid the admissions price can participate in the auction. In the past, participants were assigned numbers as they walked in and put that number down when they wanted to bid on an item. Items were displayed around the room and the last bidding was closed towards the end of the night.

During the event there will be appetizers along with wine and cheese provided for the guests to taste. A powerpoint presentation including different AHSA events and trips will be shown throughout the event and Heather Gayton will play the piano. At the beginning and closing of the event several people will give speeches.

Items in the auction range from small to large. One of the highest valued items includes a stay at the Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake and is valued at $200. Kohler donated a gift card for $100 which can be used anywhere on Kohler property. Other items include a gift basket from the Funky Bean coffee shop, a chocolate fountain, an old fashion popcorn maker, Brewers tickets, a weekend pass to Road America and numerous other gift cards.

Donators for this event were The Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake, Kohler Company, Milwaukee Brewers Club, Funky Bean, Awte Angle Gift Shop and Road America. President of AHSA Mary Claire Stockman and Donna Wentland of the Sheboygan YMCA were donors as well.

Getting donations involves the entire staff. "Everyone in the American humanics group is expected to go out to businesses in the community or in their home town and ask for donations for the event. We split up a list of businesses in the area so no business is asked twice. Also our internship advisors often make donations of items to be auctioned off," said Graff.

"The group as a whole has gone above and beyond my expectations. Everyone has done their part in getting donations and coming up with ideas to make the wine and cheese event run smoother than last year," Graff said.
