Lakeland College joins more than 700 other accredited colleges and universities as it participates, for the first time, in the 9th annual administration of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).

As the NSSE web page states, the study is designed to obtain, on an annual basis, information from scores of colleges and universities nationwide about student participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. The results will provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. Survey items on the National Survey of Student Engagement represent empirically confirmed "good practices" in undergraduate education. That is, they reflect behaviors by students and institutions that are associated with desired outcomes of college.

In January, approximately 1,200 eligible Lakeland freshmen and seniors were contacted through e-mail and invited by President Gould to take part in the survey. To be eligible, students had to be enrolled in both the fall and spring semesters, either full or part time, on or off campus. Seniors had to be nearing completion of their degree program.

Participation in the study is voluntary. Students who do choose to complete the survey will be entered into a random drawing where ten students will be selected to receive a $50 gift certificate to the campus book store.

"There are many factors that influence students when they get to college. Some of those factors involve achievements in high school, socio-economic variables, and so on. What is interesting about this study is that it involves somewhat more controllable variables pertaining to engagement once the students arrive on campus. How involved, for example, are students in campus life? How much time do they spend with professors after class or with peers working on group projects," said David Stein, director of institutional research and planning.

As of March 26, more than 400 Lakeland College students, 35.3 percent, had already responded to the survey. Twenty percent (nearly 250 students) filled out the survey within seven days of receiving their initial invitation in January. Stein is pleased with the response rate to date and believes it suggests that Lakeland students are equally interested in the initiative. Last year, the national average response rate was 39 percent.
