Why not give OS-X a shot?

Issue date: 4/12/07 Section: Opinions
Since computers have taken a place in our life, I have been wondering why we are forced to use Windows operating systems in common places like school or internet cafés or wherever we go outside.

Apple has provided the one and only alternative to our choice for a long time. While computers with Windows have dominated the world.

Since iPod became the major portable music player, which took place of the walkman and CD player, Apple has been finally gotten its own position in the market. It is no longer a rare occurrence to see people using an Apple computer, even in Lakeland's campus center.

However, it is still rare to see a desktop using OS-X, Apple's operating system, in schools. So here I am questioning why there aren't many OS-X computers around campus.

One positive opinion about OS-X includes the fact that Apple computers have been said to have fewer viruses than computers with Windows. Viruses are definitely something the IT department here is dealing with. I do not see anything negative about owning the computer whose operating system has fewer viruses than the other.

Honestly, I am not a computer guy, so I do not know how Lakeland's network is working or why Lakeland or any other places prefer to have Windows as their official operating system, but I still want to say that OS-X should be provided around campus, along side Windows. This is because Macs are easier to operate.

I could easily understand OS-Xs operation, which I could not when I tried Windows for the first time.

I understand there are some negative aspects for having OS-X on campus. In general, people have been used to Windows rather than OS-X for more than ten years. It has been said that some programs did not work with an OS-X operating system but did with Windows. Of course, Windows is also still being used by more than half of the computer market.

Apple is trying to allow users to choose Windows or OS-X on their computers. The program is a trial version, so you need to buy Windows software and go through an installation process. However; it is clear that in the near future, Apple will be able to offer us clearer and easier ways to use both operating systems. It is also the time for Windows users to change from XP to Vista.
