Dear Cary and Sherry,
The weather is getting warmer and everyone is starting to wear shorts and t-shirts. I kind of put on a few pounds over the winter and am not feeling too comfortable about getting out my summer clothes. Any suggestions? Signed, Self Conscious.
Dear Self Conscious,
Don't fret too much. I'm pretty sure you're not the only person thinking this. It's much easier to cover things up in the winter and get the reality check in the spring.
First of all, don't get too down on yourself. This negative attitude will keep you from realizing what you're after.
Look for things that you can change to reach your objective which in this case is too look and feel better in the lighter clothing.
How about your diet? Get away from fried, greasy foods. Increase the amount of fruits and vegetables you eat. Include whole grain breads and some lean meats in your diet.
Limit your junk food and soda intake, and drink more water. Give yourself a break if on. Friday night you just can't resist the Doritos. Just do not eat the whole bag.
Are you getting enough exercise? Try the fitness center on campus. It's close and free. Take a walk around campus. The whole idea is to get moving and tone up your muscles and lose the unwanted fat that has accumulated over the winter.
So watch your calorie and fat intake and get moving. It may seem at times to be a no win situation, but keep a positive attitude.
Pull out a pair of shorts and keep them visible so your goal has meaning. Get a friend to join you in your efforts and help each other stay focused.
Set reasonable weight loss goals. It took several months over the winter to get out of shape and will take you a few months to get back in shape. But each day you will feel and look better. Good Luck!
