Alicia Helion's office in the Lucius P. Chase Center gives the first impression that she is a new art professor. Her shelves are covered with art sculptures leaving only one object to make you guess otherwise. A miniature sculpture of the human brain makes you realize that she must be the newest addition to the Lakeland College psychology department.

During the interview she sits and eats an apple.

Helion teaches general psychology, cognition and learning, and other psychology courses. To make her classes exciting and fun, she plans to have many hands-on activities.

"I am constantly looking for new hands-on activities," said Helion. She believes that the best way to teach is to really love what you are teaching.

Helion has been teaching for five years, previously holding jobs at UW-Milwaukee and Brown University. She became interested in psychology after taking introduction to psychology class and finding the subject fascinating. From there she went on to do various research studies with
her psychology professor.

Lakeland has become her number one choice as a place to teach because she feels the school really gives her the chance to interact with students. She has been very impressed by Lakeland students so far.

"They are very active in their learning and seem willing to step outside of their comfort zone," said Helion. She cannot wait to see her students grow and change during their time at Lakeland. She looks forward to seeing her students reach their goals.

When she is not spending time with her husband and their two cats, Trooper and Lily, she enjoys art and plays the piano. She ran the Chicago Marathon last year.
