On July 28, Carl Constable, stepped down as head of security at Lakeland College and moved to Oklahoma to retire. Constable was head of security at Lakeland College for 15 years. He is now a pastor at a large church, where he also helps with minimal security.

Since Constable's leave, President Stephen Gould and Sandy Gibbons Vollbrecht have been attempting to find a new head of security.

"We brought some guys in for interviews in July and August, and we found some guys we liked, but it's kind of hard finding a director of security. It's a tough job, you have to wear a lot of hats to work with students. You have be a counselor sometimes, you got to play father, brother, and so on. So you have to find someone who can wear those hats," said Assistant Head of Security Johnny Mallory.

Mallory is a Lakeland alumnus and currently acting as the head of security. He's been working for security for four years and became the assistant director of security last March.

The changes in the security this year include the staffing size and training time. Constable usually had six officers on staff, and this year, security has 13 which includes ten officers, two student ticket writers, and one office assistant.

"I think 15 is a good number. If you have more people, you can get more things done, and be in more areas at one time," said Johnny.

Training used to be done by Carl, in a few day's time, while this year, two weeks of training is given to new employees.

Mallory is the most qualified on campus for the job, but said, "Honestly, being that I received the Assistant Director job back in March, I need more experience in police work and other things as well for the head job. As of right now, I'm still learning."

"You may have heard students saying, we've been a little tougher on them, for enforcing violations in the past, people think because Carl is gone, they can get away with anything they want to, well that's not true," Mallory added.

This year Mallory says security is training with more scenarios, enforcing more violations and rules, and seeing more with fresh eyes.
