The women's soccer team here at Lakeland is running and kicking again. With seven games already under their belt, the Muskies have had little success on the offensive side of the ball.
In the seven games, only three goals were scored in their favor, unfortunately contributing to their 1-6 record. The one win came on September 15 here at Lakeland against Concordia Chicago as the ladies shut out the Cougars 2-0.
Jessica Hopfinger and Amy Christenson each scored a goal while senior goalie Savannah Johnson succeeded in getting her first career shutout as a Muskie as the team didn't allow a single contested shot.
Coach Dave Madsen continues to search for improvement on both sides of the ball and also the mental attitude of his team.
"We have made some positional changes as well as style changes that differ from last season which the girls may have not completely adapted to yet this year," said Madsen. "The past few games I felt we were in great position to take advantage of several situations and score some goals but we just were not able to execute effectively and that is obviously frustrating."
The coach indeed has strong beliefs in the improvement of his team. "I am trying to transition our offense in a way that creates less individual effort and more of a team contribution to positively producing opportunities," said Madsen. "Once we improve on the small yet essential things on the defensive side, that will create more mistakes from the opponents and allow the offensive more and better chances to score."
Spirit and optimism are two things not lacking at practice and on game day. According to Madsen, the girls refuse to lower both their heads and their expectations for the remainder of the season.
"The overall spirit on the team has continued to be positive and the work ethic at practice easily proves that by the way the team always puts forth valiant efforts to improve," said Madsen. "And with our recent victory over Concordia, the taste of victory will only help the girls in every way possible."
Next the Muskies take on St. Norbert in DePere on September 20 followed by a home game versus Dominican University on September 22 leading up to a short road trip at Ripon and Rockford.
Make sure to come support your Lakeland Muskies girls soccer team as they continue to battle through the season in hopes of adding to their win column and becoming contenders in the NAC.
